I visited Evergreen Brick Works by chance on the first Sunday of their Winter Market. How delightful! It is still offered on Sunday December 15 and 22, 2024. Can’t attend? No problems, the Farmers Market goes on indoors on Saturdays throughout the winter.
You’ll want to know that…
During the winter time, the markets (Winter or Farmers) are set in the TD Future Cities Centre (in the old brick factory), which means INDOOR HEATING!
The Farmers Market at Evergreen Brick Works is on year-round on Saturdays, 9 am to 1 pm.
Evergreen Brick Works is off-the-beaten-track and surrounded by trails to explore around the pond and up the cliff of the old quarry.
Their Picnic Café is open every day (not just during the markets!) at least from 9 am to 4 pm (8 am to 6 pm on Saturdays).
Their Garden Market is open ever day from 10 am to 5 pm (9 am to 5 pm on Saturdays).
Their Farmers Market takes place every Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm (indoors during the winter inside the TD Future Cities Centre.
About the Winter Market
The experience is very different from the visit to the Christmas Village at The Distillery. Consider it as a second fun option.
I was charmed by the decorations and photo ops (featuring cute polar bear and deer) and the sight (and smell) of the fire pits in the courtyard by the indoor market.
We could grab a take-out bite at the Picnic Cafe or the markets stands and chill out in the inviting nooks with tables and chairs amidst the old brick factory.
Make sure to check the lovely immersive corner temporarily hidden at the back of the TD Future Cities Centre!
Winter scenes in the short movie changed every 15 seconds. (Not sure if we’ll also get to enjoy it during the Farmers Market held indoors during the winter.)
Getting there
The If going carless, you can catch the free Evergreen Shuttle Bus off Broadview Subway Station.
When driving, my favourite scenario is to park in the streets surrounding Chorley Park and take the stairs downtown to the Beltline Trail (also known as Moore Trail). It is a 10-min walk.
There’s also a large ramp which makes it accessible to everyone to get to the wide gravel trail. Turn right and you’ll find Evergreen Brick Works to your left.
For the curious minds
In winter time, don’t miss the chance to look up the ravine near Evergreen Brick Works. When leaves have fallen, it is possible to admire the unique architecture of the mansion called the Integral House.
Only the two uppermost stories are visible from the street (194 Roxborough Dr) but from the trail, we get to admire the three lower curvy stories built into the ravine. Impressive!
The project designed by Brigitte Shim was commissioned by mathematician James Stewart as his residence (hence the name of the house) and completed in 2009. Watch this video! The house was listed at 23M$ in 2015. Asking price was 21.5M$ in 2019, they got 18M$… but it includes a performance space fit for an audience of 100!
